I was a man upon a mission, with a monkey chasing me
I ran out on the runway, made peace with what I’d seen
Went to where the world looked nothing like the places I had been

I keep my favorite images close to my chest
They warm me and reframe me in my struggle with the rest

A day in late November, through Frankfurt on the train
I was trampled down and lonely, left the bahnhof in the rain
The keller crew were ignorant, and I’d lost my ground again
While these covers fanned the madness, I felt the blackness in my veins

Then I limped back into East Berlin with a hurt that filled my eyes
I was rolling like a zombie with a heart too scorched to cry
So when the answer landed on me it wasn’t with surprise
That I gave the life remaining to the one thing left to try

It’s a sign of what I’ve done right that you come in my life to stay
